Acara Institute publishes independent research guides on residential clean energy — solar panels, heat pumps, and home EV charging. We’re not affiliated with any installer, manufacturer, or energy company. We don’t accept payment to rank products higher. We just research and report.
Why we built this
When a homeowner starts researching solar panels or heat pumps, they quickly run into a problem: almost every source of information has a financial connection to the companies selling those products. Installer review sites earn referral fees. Product comparison sites rank brands based on affiliate commissions. “Independent” guides are often written by people who have never spoken to a homeowner or examined a real installation quote.
The result is that homeowners making $15,000 to $40,000 purchasing decisions are navigating information that is, at best, optimized for clicks — and at worst, quietly working against their interests. That’s the problem Acara Institute exists to fix.
What you’ll find here
Our research covers four areas:
- Solar panels — installation costs, payback timelines, brand comparisons, and a full breakdown of the federal tax credit and state-level incentives.
- Heat pumps — heat pump vs gas furnace cost analysis, cold climate performance, best brands, and the $2,000 federal rebate most homeowners don’t know they qualify for.
- EV chargers — Level 1 vs Level 2 explained, installation costs, charger reviews, and the home EV charger tax credit.
- Home energy — energy audits, insulation, smart thermostats, and battery storage — the upgrades that pay for themselves over time.
Every guide is written for homeowners in the decision-making stage. We don’t write for engineers, installers, or policy researchers — there are better resources for those audiences.
How we operate
No installer partnerships. We do not accept payment from solar installers, HVAC companies, or equipment manufacturers in exchange for placement, recommendations, or rankings. If a product or company appears in our content, it’s because we researched it — not because they paid to be there.
Transparent affiliate relationships. We do earn commissions on some affiliate links — primarily for products like EV chargers and smart thermostats available through Amazon, and for energy comparison services. These relationships don’t influence our rankings or recommendations. We disclose them clearly in every article where they appear.
Current information only. Tax credits change. Installer pricing shifts. Technology improves. We review and update our guides on a regular schedule. We also flag within articles when information is especially time-sensitive or likely to have changed since the last update.
Plain English throughout. Clean energy is loaded with jargon — kWh, COP ratings, SEER2, NEMA plugs. We explain every technical term the first time we use it and write every guide as if the reader is encountering this material for the first time.
Who writes here
Our content is produced by independent researchers and writers with backgrounds in energy policy, residential construction, and consumer finance. Every guide goes through a factual review before publication and is flagged for update when relevant regulations, prices, or product specs change.
We’re a small, focused team. We don’t publish for volume — we publish when we have something genuinely useful to say to homeowners making real decisions.
Affiliate disclosure: Acara Institute participates in affiliate programs including Amazon Associates and energy service referral programs.
